Building Quality Inbound Links

One Of The Most Important Factors In Determining A Site's PageRank, As Well As Overall Ranking Within Google's Index, Is The Quality Of Incoming Links. Today, We Look At Some Tips From Insiders Across The Web On How To Go About Building A Quality Incoming Link Structure.

Thoughts On Link Buidling

Obtaining Quality Links Can Feel Like An Arduous Process When Trying To Get A Site Off The Ground. Sure, There Are Lots Of Shady Methods That One Could Employ To Achieve "instant Linkification" If One Were So Inclined, But These Methods Present Little In Terms Of A Long Term Strategy For Link Building.

So, Enterprising Journalist That I Am, I Took To The Web To See What Those Most Familiar With The Practice Of Link Building Had To Say About Getting Quality Inbound Links.

Ken Yarmosh Is A Strategy Consultant For Viget Labs. In His Personal Blog, He Outlines 7 Ways To Achieve Quality Links. You Can Read The Blog Entry For A Complete Rundown, But There Are Two Items That I Believe Bear Specific Mention:

Do, Say, Or Write Something Really Stupid (or Controversial).

It's Funny How The Extremes Work. Honestly, There Are Too Many Examples To Choose From On This One. And I Don't Really Advocate It Anyway. But If You Are Interested, You Can Check Out Bert Decker's Top Ten (Best And) Worst Communicators Of 2006 To Refresh Your Memory On Some Good Examples.

Ah, The Art Of The Sound Byte; It's Finally Crossed Over Into The Online Realm. Boldness Of Speech, Misplaced Or Not, Goes A Long Way In Getting People To Link To Your Content. Make Outlandish Claims (at Least Try To Back Them Up, Though), Call Out Companies And Individuals If You Don't Like What They're Doing, And Don't Be Afraid To Rock The Boat.

Or, As My Colleague Jason Lee Miller Would Say, "Write Like You've Got A Pair."

Make People Laugh.

Everyone Loves A Good Laugh. Think About The Vast Majority Of E-mails And Links That Your Family And Friends Have Forwarded To You Recently. The Likelihood Is That They Were Something That Made You Laugh Or At Least Smile. A Good Example Would Include The Evolution Of Dance Or The Old Numa Numa Video (still A Classic In My Mind).

This Goes Hand In Hand With The Previous Point. If You're Going To Have The Guts To Make Controversial Statements, You Have To Be Willing To Not Take Yourself So Seriously. Before The Website's Recent "change In Direction", Valleywag Was A Sterling Example Of Controversial Humor. With Nick Douglas As The Main Writer, There Was Nary A Day That Went By That I Didn't Experience A Giant Belly Laugh Over Something That Had Been Written Over At The 'Wag.

Humor Is Powerful In Luring Links To Your Content.

Okay, So We've Touched On Some Things That You Should Do In Order To Make A Site More Linkable. Now, Let's Look At Something To Avoid In Striving For Quality Inbound Links. Donna Konley At The Web Design Library Gives This Warning To Site Administrators:

Avoid Link Farms And Exchanges.

Link Farms Are Designed To Allow People To Submit Web Site Links So That They Can Increase The Number Of Links Leading To Their Web Sites. The Problem With Link Farms Is That They Usually Accept Links From Anyone, Which Means That The Quality Of The Links On These Sites Is Very Low. Links To Computer Repair Shops May Be Published Next To Links Leading To Clothing Retailers.

Another Problem With Link Farms Is That You Cannot Control The Links Displayed. If There Are Adult Sites Or Other Questionable Material Linked To From The Link Farm Or Exchange, You Run The Risk Of Having Prospects Associate You With That Type Of Web Site. Knowing How To Keep Your Links High In Quality And Relevance Can Help You Achieve The Best Results From Your Link-building Efforts.

Again, Don't Take The Quick Fix. In The Long Run, Your Site's Reputation, As Well As It's Ranking Within The Index, Will Suffer More Than Prosper From Questionable Link Building Tactics.

Content Issues Are Key, But Are There Other Methods When It Comes To Bringing In Links? Brian Hawkins Of Extreme Site Promotions Offers This Tip:

Allow Other Websites To Use Your Forum Or Discussion Board For Their Own Site. Just Have Them Link Directly To The Forum. You Can Even Setup A Special Forum/category And Make Them A Moderator For That Section Or Alternately You Can Offer To Run It For Them So They Don't Need To Increase Their Workload. Not Only Will They Be Linking To Your Site They'll Be Actively Sending Traffic To It.

Seek To Form Partnerships With Other Content Providers. Build Your Links Over Time By Establishing A Good Rapport With Other Reputable Businesses.

All These Methods Will Provide A Solid Foundation When It Comes To Linkage. Obviously, As A Business Grows, The Methods In Which It Generates Incoming Links Will Change. There Is No "one Size Fits All" Approach To Link Building, Only Underlying Concepts Which Companies Will Have To Adapt To Fit Specific Needs And Goals.

If You Can Manage To Do All This, And Do It Well, You Can Expect To See A Marked Improvement In The Quality Of Inbound Links To Your Site.

New YouTube Call to Action Works Well for Non-profits

This week YouTube launched a call-to-action feature for its non-profit partners, allowing them to include in-video clickable ads leading to their web sites. Apparently they are quite effective, because in one day, one of the partners raised $10,000 using one.

Of course it probably helps that the video was featured on YouTube's home page. The video can be seen here:

The call to action in this particular video overlay says, "Give a person clean water. 100% of you gift directly funds water wells" and links to the proper donation page.

"The response from the YouTube community was overwhelming -- thanks to you, charity:water was able to raise over $10,000 in one day from the video," writes Ramya Raghavan on the YouTube Blog. "That's enough to build two brand-new wells in the Central African Republic and give over 150 people clean drinking water for 20 years!"

YouTube is encouraging other nonprofits to add a similar call to action overlay. To do, they simply need to go to "edit video" and fill out the fields in the section marked "Call to Action overlay." There, users can add a short headline, ad text, a destination URL, and upload an optional image. The overlay will appear every time someone watches the video.

Big Publishers Want Special Treatment From Google

Update: In An Interesting Turn To This Story, The New York Times Has Eliminated 993,000 Article Pages As It Rolls International Herald Tribune (IHT) Into The NYT Site. Instead Of Redirecting The Articles To The Same Article On NYT, They All Simply Go Now To One Landing Page.

Ryan Tate At Valleywag Writes, "The Times' Longtime Online Chief, Martin Niesenholtz, Recently Whined That A Google Search On The Word 'Gaza' Didn't Include Any Of His Content On The First Results Page. And Yet He Just Nuked 121,000 Of His Own Articles Containing That Keyword."

Original Article: Big-brand Publishers Don't Like Being Overshadowed By Bloggers. What Else Is New?

A New AdAge Article Discusses A Group Of Such Publishers (including Brands Like The Wall Street Journal, ESPN, And The New York Times) Which Make Up Google's Publishing Advisory Board, Which Is Calling For Google To Rank Their Content Higher Because They're "the Original Sources" Of News Stories. Of Course We All Know That While That May Often Be The Case, It Is Also Very Often Not. Somtimes Even "original Sources" Even Come From Microblogging. Remember When The News Of The Emergency Landing On The Hudson River Broke On Twitter?

Twiiter Hudson Plane Crash

This Is Not A New Discussion. As Steve Rubel Says, When He Read The Article He Felt Like He Had Stepped Back Into 2004.

The Truth Of The Matter Is, Many Big Brand Publishers Have Become More Blog-like And Many Bloggers And Blog-style News Sites Have Become Big Brands Themselves. Rubel Phrases It Well, "To Me, We Don't Have Zebras And Elephants Anymore. They Have Mated And We're All One Species."

But That's Not How Some Of These Publishers See It. They'd Rather Get Special Treatment Based On Their Own Brand Rather Than Putting Forth The Effort In Search Engine Optimization That Others Would When They Weren't Ranking To Their Satisfaction. Matt McGee (who Has Also Joined This Particular Discussion) Recently Looked At A Study Showing That The Fortune 500 Is Still "largely Invisible" In Natural Search Results.

So Where Does Google Stand? A Recent Update Did Supposedly Cater To Bigger Brands Anyway. "There's Absolutely Value To Original Content," AdAge Quotes A Google Spokesperson. "There's Value To Derivative Content, Too. We Look At This In Many Ways From The Point Of View Of The User. But The Truth Is There Are So Many Shades Of Gray Even Within, Quote, Original Content."

The Big-brand Publishers Are Awaiting A More Concrete Answer From Google. The Council Meets Again On April 30. With So Much Gray, That Answer Is Probably Going To Be Hard To Reach.

Where Do You Stand On This Subject? Talk About It With WPN Readers.

Top Blogs' Favorite Platforms Identified

Whether a given blogger takes pride in being a weirdo or feels safer as part of a crowd, a new report will help him (or her) sort out exactly where he (or she) stands. Pingdom staffers took a close look at which platforms are most common among the most popular blogs.

WordPress grabbed first place with no problem, with 27 out of the top 100 blogs (as ranked by Technorati) using it. The platform's fans range from big corporations like the New York Times to individuals such as Chris Brogan.

Then came TypePad, with 16 followers, Blogsmith with 14, and Movable Type with 12. There are some pretty impressive names to be found on their sections of a user list, as well. (Think Wired properties, Autoblog, and Boing Boing, respectively.)

We'll skip down to Blogger next. It seems like a bit of a defeat for Google to find it in ninth place, being used by only three out of the top 100 blogs. Worse still: one of those three blogs is the Official Google Blog, landing the platform in "my mom thinks I'm handsome" territory.

Ah, well. Hats off to the Royal Pingdom crew for the research they did, and good luck with the transfer if you decide to choose a new blog platform for yourself or your company.

Cuban: NBA Makes Money with Twitter

We're hearing more and more about companies and organizations making better use of Twitter as a revenue driver than Twitter itself. As far as entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is concerned, the NBA is one of those organizations.

Cuban has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for tweeting about the refs. Fanhouse has all the details, but long story short, Cuban used the popular social network to vent his frustrations about a certain officiating crew, was fined for it, and has Tweeted about the incident since.

Mark Cuban Tweets

"Of course, the Twitter issue raises an interesting debate about whether or not Cuban should be allowed to discuss the referees in a place like social media or on a blog (obviously, speaking directly to a group of media members won't cut it, but at what point do we start considering this a First Amendment issue?)", says Fanhouse's Will Brinson.

Brinson makes a good point. His tweets were just as public as a press conference though (especially considering that the press often goes to Twitter for stories), if not more so. If he just wanted to make mention of the incident to friends, perhaps direct messages would have been the way to go.

The whole thing is just another instance of the " think before you tweet " concept. Cuban may have had an error in judgment, though the tone of his Tweeting hasn't suggested that he sees the fine as too hard a hit.
