Google Breaks Data Center Silence

Google's never been too chatty about its data centers; the search giant is slow to even confirm the centers' physical locations, never mind discuss what's going on inside. But at the Data Center Efficiency Summit, Google spilled a few secrets, and there's definitely some impressive technology in place.

Google Logo

Google's taken steps to ensure that its custom-built servers require only a tiny amount of energy. It's also safeguarded them against electricity outages by building in batteries. A modular method of storing the servers has been embraced, and all in all, Google appears to be at least a year ahead of some of its rivals.

Peter Burrows explained, "Microsoft has been crowing about the fact that it opened up a huge new data center in Chicago in which all of the servers are stored in shipping containers, an approach that makes it simpler and cheaper to deploy hundreds of servers at once. Turns out Google has been doing this since 2005. And while Microsoft has a goal to achieve a 'power usage effectiveness' score of 1.2 (where a score of 1 means all of the electricity consumed is used to run the computers, rather than to cool and light the facility) in the next few years, Google has already hit this level as of the fourth quarter of 2008."

In fact, Google's most efficient facility has a score of 1.12.

These are the sorts of things that, even if the average user isn't likely to notice, should save Google money and prevent it from experiencing certain problems.

Google Shows Paid Search/TV Relationship

Google Has Conducted A Study Looking At How Paid Search Affects TV Viewing Habits. The Results Are Pretty Interesting.

Adam StewartAdam Stewart, Google's Industry Director For Media & Entertainment Tells WebProNews That The Research Confirms That Paid Search Is An Effective Way To Build Traffic For A Network's Website And, As A Result, Increase Viewership For Content Like Online Video.

"But We Also Found That Paid Search Can Support The Core Business Of TV By Driving Tune-in. That's The Key Point: Paid Search Can Influence Online And Offline Behavior."

"In This Changing Media Landscape, We See An Enormous Opportunity For TV Marketers To Use Paid Search To Bolster Their Core Business Model And Drive TV Tune-in," Stewart Says. "We Also Think Paid Search Can Support An Emerging Business Model For TV Networks By Driving Traffic To Branded Websites. Search Advertising, As Part Of An Integrated Marketing Campaign, Is An Effective Way For Entertainment Marketers To Increase Viewership And Stretch Their Dollars In A Downturn."

Stewart Could Not Tell Me All Of The Shows And Networks That Were Tested In The Study, But He Says They Worked With Leading Networks And Shows For Each Category.

The Study Was Conducted Over The Course Of A Month At The End Of 2008. Respondents Were Asked To Query A Keyword With The Intention Of Finding Out More Info About A Show Or A Network. They Were Then Driven To Different SERPs Based On Their Queries, And Were Only Exposed To One Show-specific Search Term And SERP.

Some Highlights From The Study Include:

- Search Advertising Resulted In A 5% Lift In Clicks To Branded Sites For New Shows And 12% For Exising Shows.

Lifts in Traffic

- Search Advertising Resulted In A 285% Lift In Awareness Of New Shows, And A 63% Lift For Existing Shows.

Awareness Lifts

- Search Advertising Resulted In A 57% Lift In Awareness Of The Advertiser's Show, And A 45% Decline In Awareness Of The Time Slot Competition

Unaided Awareness

- Search Advertising Resulted In A 25% Lift In Likelihood To Tune In To New Shows And A 30% Lift In Likelihood To Tune In To Existing Shows.

Likelihood to Tune In

The Following Chart Sums Up What Marketers Should Get Out Of The Study:

Key Takeaways and Marketing Implications

I Would Guess Google Hopes To Spark Greater Interest In Its TV Advertising Platform As Well As Search Ads By Illustrating How The Two Could Compliment Each Other. Marketers Going After Specific Television Timeslots Will Surely Find The Information Of Value.

Getting More Blog Readers and Twitter Followers

Of people who both blog and tweet, the majority would overwhelmingly prefer to have more blog readers than followers on Twitter. This is according to surveys conducted by Darren Rowse who runs ProBlogger and TwiTip.

Would you prefer more blog readers or Twitter followers? Tell us.

This is not entirely surprising, since generally, much more effort is put into a blog post than a 140-character or less tweet, but there is certainly a gold-rush for Twitter followers. Jason Calacanis for one is willing to pay a pretty penny for them.

Rowse polled both his ProBlogger audience (which is presumably comprised mainly of bloggers) and his Twitip audience (which is made up of Twitterers). As expected, the Twitip crowd favored Twitter followers slightly more, but there was still a very clear majority wanting more blog readers. Rowse provides the following graphs:

Darren Rowse's Graphs for Blog Readers/Twitter Followers

There are certainly arguments for the value of both categories, and Rowse covers them pretty well here. There are some pretty obvious ones for blogs:

- they require more time/effort

- they provide more info

- they are most likely not going anywhere, while Twitter may be hot right now, but who knows where it will be in the future?

- the more blog readers you have, the more times your posts are likely to be linked to on Twitter anyway

There are obvious benefits to having Twitter followers too though, particularly for marketers.

- More followers is a good indication that there is demand for what you offer as a business, and that people are interested in your product(s)

- relationships easier to form (yes blogs have comments, but typically not the real-time conversation factor, and people are at Twitter to talk...they're not necessarily at your blog to do so)

Of course people who both blog and tweet know they don't have to choose between one medium or the other. They compliment each other, and ideally can work to each other's benefits. Twitter can gain you more blog readers, and a blog can gain you more Twitter followers.

It's all in the execution.
Write good content that Twitterers want to link to. This has plenty of potential for getting you more readers. Include chiclets on your posts, making it easy to share your content (this shouldn't be limited to Twitter). Include a prominent link for people to follow you on Twitter (a Twitter logo here will help draw attention).

Link to good content from others when you Tweet. If people like what you're pointing them to, you'll likely gain more followers. Who would've guessed it all comes back to content? You could also mention your blog casually from time to time. This may increase awareness of it. Just because someone follows you on Twitter, does not mean they know about your blog. That said, you probably don't want to ram it down their throats either.

So, blogging Twitter users, would you rather have more blog readers or Twitter followers? Tell us.

Yahoo Plugs Shortcuts Into WordPress

The company expanded its Yahoo Shortcuts into a dynamic set of tools available as a plug-in for blogs using the WordPress platform.

A clever toolset newly announced by Yahoo offers WordPress bloggers a sidekick bearing additional content from Yahoo's various content services, including the Flickr photo sharing site.

Yahoo Shortcuts have been seen in Yahoo's pages as dashed underlined links. Doing a mouseover of one of these provides a popup with additional content related to the linked term.

The process takes a step forward for WordPress bloggers. After installing the plug-in, Yahoo Shortcuts watches what one writes. After the post is completed, the plug-in's "Review this post" button leads to suggestions for Shortcut content.

Bloggers can leave suggested Shortcuts in place, or remove them as desired. When keeping the Shortcut, the blogger has the option to keep it as a link, or make it a badge that can be embedded in the post.

Yahoo's Flickr integration with the WordPress plug-in will be the feature that catches a log of attention. The company said in the Shortcuts description it searches for relevant, Creative Commons-licensed photos based on terms appearing in the post.

Photos can be resized and placed anywhere within a post. The plug-in automatically attributes the photos to their owners who have made them available under those Creative Commons terms.

TV Still Dominates Media Consumption

Nielsen has shared results of its "State of the Media" research. Not that this fact is surprising, but television is still the most preferred gateway for media consumption.

In the last quarter of '08, the average household watched over 151 hours of TV in a month. Internet users logged on for 27 viewing hours a month, and mobile subscribers registered four hours of video and three hours of Internet a month. Other highlights of the research as presented by Nielsen include:

- Despite 3 in 10 households owning a DVR, live TV continues to be the favorite way to watch TV.

- 54 percent of U.S. households have one or two TVs.

- Hispanic households are more than twice as likely as other groups to download movies.

- Fully 91 percent of households have Internet access, with 57 percent having high-speed connections.

- Viewers can be clustered into eight discrete segments based on gender, age, media consumption levels, ethnicity and social outlook.

Nielsen's President of Global Media Client Services Dave Thomas says, "Media has become a digital funhouse: phones deliver TV programming. Computers enable phone calls. Televisions serve as gaming arcades. Consumers access video wherever and whenever they can. But the fact remains that TV still dominates."

Monthly Time Spent in Hours: Minutes per user 2+

Nielsen's findings echo a study from McPheters & Company finding that TV ads and even magazine ads are proving more effective than online advertising. This information is a wake-up call to get online advertisers to take advantage of tactics that inspire grater engagement from consumers.

Twitter Tweak Could Improve Search Rankings

Twitter has adjusted the title tags for member pages. Where they used to go "Twitter / username" they now go "User's Real Name (username) on Twitter"

Twitter Title Tag Change

According to Robin Wauters at TechCrunch, Twitter just implemented this change this week. As he also points out, this could have an impact on how Twitter pages are ranked in search engines. He notes that his page ranks as the very first result on Google for a search of his name. For my name, it is not even on the first page. As a matter of fact, it's not even the first result for a search for "Chris Crum, Twitter."

Actually, for the query "Chris Crum" a Twitterholic page for me ranks higher than my Twitter page. After a fair amount of digging, I can finally find my Twitter page on the fifth SERP.

Still, if Twitter pages are ranking that high for a lot of people, it's nothing to be ignored. Wauters makes an interesting point. "The implications are not to be underestimated. Being the top result for a name search means business, just ask all those venture-backed startups building people search engines who are vying for the sweet spots on the first page," he says.

Perhaps I just don't have enough followers (aka links to my Twitter page) to get my page ranked that high. If people weren't already begging for followers, they certainly will be now.

Looks like Twitter might carry even more of an SEO incentive now. For more on where social networks like Twitter and Facebook fit into the SEO equation, read my discussion with Todd Malicoat, Joe Whyte, Joe Griffin, and Stephen Pitts.

Of course there is also the question of whether or not people want their Twitter pages ranked as the first result for their name. This might not be the best thing for online reputation management. If these pages are ranking well, people are really going to have to watch what they say even more. The whole "think before you Tweet" mentality will be that much more important.
